improving energy utilisation - reducing carbon emissions - finding energy solutions
Hotel Schipol A4, Amsterdam Airport - Hoofddorp (The Netherlands)
9.-11. June 2008
Saving energy is no longer just part of the environmental agenda. For the European Pulp & Paper Industry it has become the most crucial issue for its competitiveness. In spite of significant progress in the last few decades a lot remains to be done and the necessity to install better or even Best Available Technologies is greater than ever. But in the long run these BATs will have to be re-defined on the basis of developments which today are considered visions.
This briefly describes what will be in the theme of a Strategic Workshop on “Improving Energy Efficiency in Papermaking“, organized in the frame of the COST (European Cooperation in the field of Scientific and Technical Research) programme. This event will bring together senior Paper Industry representatives, scientists and recognised high profile speakers to discuss the options the paper industry in Europe has in order to address its possibly greatest challenge of the future.
The main objectives of this Strategic Workshop are to provide rationales and guidelines for research agendas and funding agencies by identifying
- what can be done immediatedy and without major investements
- how the installation of BATs (or state-of-the-art technology) might help
- which and how today‘s visions can be turned into solutions and BATs of the future.
Thus energy saving, technology development, BATs as well as socio-economic issues are identified as key questions for the future and dealt in keynotes and working groups.
As former strategic workshops organised by COST have proved, the conference may have a direct and effective impact on European research strategies and funding policies. The participation of many and the most prominent actors in engery saving is important for the impact of this conference. The participants may be sure to have been included in this dynamics from the very beginning on.
